FAQs

What is BRX?

The BrightRoll Exchange, or BRX, is a self-service online video ad-buying platform that provides buyers with efficient and transparent access to video inventory with unmatched scale, efficiency and return on investment.

Why was BRX created?

The online video advertising space is experiencing tremendous growth in demand as buyers search for video inventory and capabilities that complement their existing media-buying efforts. In a recent BrightRoll study, however, nearly half of online publishers reported that at least 20 percent of their online video advertising inventory is never sold, indicating that many buyers are still struggling to find the most efficient way to access and selectively target the inventory they want, at the price right they’re willing to pay. BRX was created to help buyers address these needs.

What are the benefits of using BRX to buy video ad inventory?

The BRX platform’s self-service model simplifies the process of buying online video ads, while giving buyers more transparency and value for their ad dollars. With thousands of targetable URLs aggregated from video sites, video players, mediation layers and ad servers, media buyers have the broadest reach possible for video ad campaigns. BRX’s user level targeting enables advertisers to target using their own data, BRX data or 3rd party data. By conducting a dynamic auction for each impression, BRX enables true market pricing so that advertisers minimize their spend and maximize their return. And, the platform provides real-time information on placements, campaign performance and price.

What kind of inventory is on BRX?

By aggregating large amounts of video ad inventory across the most popular sites, servers, and supply side platforms, BRX offers a tremendous range of options when it comes to running effective campaigns. With BRX, buyers can target a wide range of video ad inventory, such as:

  • top-tier professional sites
  • user-generated content
  • mobile apps
  • verticals such as entertainment, home & family, and/or gaming
  • top-rated comScore sites
  • local inventory in online print or radio
  • and more!

How does it work?

To begin buying inventory, buyers simply need to log in and create a campaign. Using the straightforward BRX web interface, flighting, budget and pacing parameters can be set up with minimal effort. Likewise, campaigns can be targeted by geo, category, dayparting, audience, etc, in just a few clicks. And, of course, all campaign assets can be managed from one central location.

How do I get started?

Simply click here to apply to be a buyer on BRX, and one of our dedicated account representatives will be in touch with you shortly.

How much does it cost?

Buyers only pay for inventory they win in a real-time auction, with the market clearing price calculated as one cent over the second highest bid. In addition, buyers pay a small ad hosting fee, as well as a usage-based fee if they choose to target 3rd party data through BRX.

Publisher Real-time Bidding (RTB) FAQs

What is Real-time Bidding (RTB)?

RTB is a new feature from BrightRoll, which offers qualified and approved buyers the ability to modify their bid for each impression they buy from us. In an RTB auction buyers are passed a bid request that includes information about the ad impression. They then respond in real time (milliseconds) with a bid for the impression.

How Does RTB Help Publishers?

In general, RTB improves yield and fill rates for publishers by significantly increasing buyer demand.

Can publishers control which RTB buyers can bid on their inventory?

Yes, as always, you have complete control over which buyers have access to your inventory via RTB.

Can publishers set price floors (minimum bids)?

Yes, in BRX publishers set the minimum price they will accept for their inventory. Only bids above your minimum will be considered and the floor price you set will be the same for both RTB and non-RTB buyers. Of course, the lower your floor price, the more demand you will make your site eligible to receive.

Can publishers control which advertisers are eligible to run on their sites?

Yes, as always. BRX allows publishers to exclude advertisers that can run on their sites. The launch of RTB will not impact existing settings.

How will BRX make sure that RTB will not slow down ad delivery or page loads?

RTB will not impact ad delivery time or latency at all. RTB Buyers on BRX must respond to bid requests within a strict time limit. Only bids submitted within the time limit are considered. Further, BRX tests and approves RTB bidders based on their ability to respond with valid bids.

Who are the current BRX approved RTB buyers?

All BRX RTB buyers must go through an approval and certification process. Initial approved RTB buyers are:

  • Turn
  • Rocket Fuel
  • DataXu
  • MediaMath
  • Media 6 Degrees
